Teachers, fire service team up for safety

As part of the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council's seasonal safety campaigns, such as last year's Autumn Watch Seasonal Safety and Spring into Summer…Spring into Safety, Keeping Our Kids Safe is a partnership between Ontario's teachers and the fire service. Keeping Our Kids Safe consists of curriculum approved lesson plans developed by the Council for school teachers to incorporate into their classroom lessons. These lesson plans focus on preventing injuries at various times of the year. Because the lesson plans are curriculum approved, they are easy for teachers to incorporate into every day lessons.

"This is a great opportunity for us to work closer with teachers to disseminate injury prevention and safety information," said Bernard Moyle, Council Chair and Ontario Fire Marshal. "Teachers are the educational experts. The fire service needs to get injury prevention and safety information into their hands so that these lessons last with kids forever. Keeping Our Kids Safe does just that."

Copies of a brochure advertising Keeping Our Kids Safe is distributed in a quarterly magazine sent to elementary school teachers across the province. To encourage teachers to participate, the Council holds a competition every year, providing prizes to teachers who have taught the safety lessons in their classrooms.

Every time a safety lesson is taught, teachers can submit a "Lesson Taught!" form to enter a draw for prizes. Last year, prizes included a trip for two to Florida, a weekend getaway to Toronto, and class pizza parties. Lesson plans and "lesson taught" forms can be downloaded from the Council's web site at www.firesafetycouncil.com.

Subtasks were great!  Covered and listed several Learning Expectations.  The only thing that could be maybe included is to have something for the children to receive after they have had this lesson…maybe a certificate.  I'm having my students make their own certificate.

The class had a great time doing the safety rules for riding in various vehicles.  I was surprised that they came up with not driving intoxicated.

As part of our Science unit on Energy, we discussed electricity in our homes.  It is a perfect tie-in to how to practise safe electrical measures.  The children eagerly identified items in the pictures provided.  It is also a chance for them to discuss if they have seen these measures in their homes.

The lesson was very good.  It actually coincided with our trip to Reptilia - therefore, before the trip we talked about bus riding safety and then upon our return, we talked about the other vehicles.  This was just before the long weekend and we were easily able to tie in amusement ride safety as some children had been to Wonderland the weekend before and some were planning to go of the long weekend.  The icons provided were good and helped children make associations to those vehicles.

A suggestion might be to add a fireworks safety lesson in light of the recent publicity generated by the recent Victoria Day fireworks in some Toronto parks!

Instead of styrofoam egg, we used 1/2 of plastic Easter egg with elastics; it worked very well.  The students were very intrigued and focused.  They clearly understood the concepts and proudly shared their learnings with their peers and family.

This is a topic that needs to be reviewed continuously with students.  They tend to think that they are invincible.  We use concrete materials to reinforce the message.

The kids enjoyed the lesson and made personal connections to the material.  For example, one student talked about the carbon monoxide detector in their home while another talked about having an air exchange system in the portable.

My JK/SK students are Sparky's biggest fans.  They love the video and know all of Sparky's tips from having a safety plan in case of fire both at home and school, keeping low to avoid smoke and of course STOP, DROP and ROLL.  Students have donned uniform and clipboards as they inspect the school, finding all the exits signs, fire hoses and alarms.

I really thought the lesson went well.  It was a great visual demonstration on the important of helmets.  One request would be to create separate letters to send home specific to each lesson taught to follow up home review with extra information provided.  Instead of styrofoam, I used a few sponges around an egg with some elastics around it.  It worked well, therefore, you may want to give another example of what else could be used.

We watched the video "Be Cool About Fire Safety" before the lesson.  This video was perfect match for the activity "The Great Escape".  The children left school that day very excited about completing their homework assignment.  Almost 100% of homework assignments were completed.  I think the lesson worked really well in teaching the families about fire safety.  Thank you.

We discussed safe and unsafe situations in the kitchen - burns/scalds and hazards.  We actually went to a fire hall and visited inside the smoke house which also showed us all of the common household hazards *hot pots, etc.)

Really like the idea of having students sort pictures into electrical vs. non electrical; suggestion, use large envelopes instead of paper bags as they are easier to store for next year's lessons *can easily be laminated for durability). - sorting activity can be left as a free-time centre for review; master copy of electrical/non electrical graphics should be in black & white; coloured pictures don't photocopy well, especially the campfire flames; larger graphics, especially curling iron; students had difficulty figuring out what it was, but recognized the appliance when I showed them a picture cut from a catalogue.

We liked the lesson.  Many students did not have an escape plan and it is a way for parents to follow through at home and develop a safe plan for their family.  The lesson tied directly to the safety of students and our ideas of school escape plans and meeting places.  Thank you for providing support for students and teachers.

It was a great lesson.  We talked about the importance of fire alarms and checking them making sure there is one on each floor of the house.  Homework assignment was sent home for them to be "junior inspectors" and fill in checklist.  Each student had a chance to push the button on a real alarm to see if it would sound.  As well for homework each child has to draw an escape plan of house.  We also watched ?Sparky's ABC Fire Safety" Video.  I am a volunteer fire fighter in Gananoque so I enjoy and feel this is important.

I found the lesson plan concise and easy to follow.  Rather than give each child a photocopy of the activity sheet, I enlarged it and we completed it as a class.  I keep the paper bags (from notes to teacher) in the classroom and the students use them during activity time.
