Teachers' Corner Questions and Answers

Q: What is the ‘KEEPING OUR KIDS SAFE” Campaign?
A: This is a safety campaign focused on minimizing preventable injuries from occurring to children, and their caregivers, over the fall and winter months. This is a partnership between the teachers of Ontario and the Ontario Fire Service and the goal of this educational campaign is to modify behaviour so that everyone truly has a safe fall/winter season. This campaign is a very significant component of the broader "SUMMER SMART" and "AUTUMN WATCH" fire prevention campaigns organized by The Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council.

Q: What safety areas are included in this campaign?
A: Prevention strategies in areas such as Fire Safety, Bicycle Safety, Amusement Park Rides, Fire Drills, Holiday Kitchen Safety and Electrical Safety, and protection and response strategies involving smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.

Q: How can I participate in this campaign?
A: You can participate by obtaining the ‘ready-made’ summer safety lesson plans and fall safety lesson plans and teaching them to your class.

Q: What grades are covered?
A: Grouped lesson plans have been created for elementary school kindergarten through grade 8.

Q: Do these lessons correlate with the Ontario Curriculum.
A: Yes! Each lesson correlates to an Ontario Curriculum document in the subject areas of English, Arts, Health and Physical Education. These lesson plans were developed by teachers … for teachers … with ease of teaching in mind.

Q. How do I obtain these lesson plans?
A: These safety lesson plans are all available for review, and for easy and fast downloading as .pdf files from this site. Pertinent background safety information is also posted.

Q: How long does it take to teach this material?
A: Depending on the grade level of the lesson, it would take up between 1 1/2 to 2 periods to teach the lesson.

Q: When should I plan on completing these lessons with my class?
A: You can teach them right now up until the end of the year 2007. Summers lessons should be taught and submitted by May 25, 2007 and Autumn Watch lessons should be taught and submitted by November 30, 2007 to be eligible for the draw prizes.

Q: What other resources are available to support this campaign?
A: Other resources available to support this campaign include your local fire service, and the Office of the Fire Marshal of Ontario. In addition to reinforce the lessons in the Teachers’ Corner there is a sample Parent and Caregiver Letter that can be given as to your students to take home so that parents and caregivers can become knowledgeable about the campaign and can become involved in these safety strategies. In the Teacher’s Corner, you will find background safety information and safety web links. This information is also available in the Parents' Corner. In the Kids’ Corner, students will find additional activity sheets that can be done jointly with parents or caregivers, and links to fun interactive safety sites for children.

Q: Finally, what are the benefits of teaching these lessons?
A: Firstly—your students and in many cases their caregivers will sustain fewer preventable injuries—or none at all—over the fall and winter months. Secondly, by teaching the safety lessons and submitting the LESSON TAUGHT! form your name will be entered into the draw to win one of the prizes … including the Grand Prize of an Orlando,Florida March Break Vacation for Two in 2005.

Q: When are the prize draw dates?
A: For the Weekend Getaways and the Grand Prize of an Orlando, Florida March Break Vacation for Two in 2008, the draw will be made December 2007.

Q: What are the steps to take to participate?
A: Step 1:
Complete the brief on-line registration form to outline your intent to participate in the campaign. Or, you can fill out the hard copy Registration Form.

Step 2:
Review and download the appropriate lesson plans, and teach the lessons utilizing resources that are appropriate for your class.

Step 3:
Visit the web site again and complete the on-line “LESSON TAUGHT!” form, or download the .pdf file and fax it in as above. Mission accomplished! The children in your class will have a safer fall and winter. Their parents and caregivers will have a safer fall and winter. And YOU AND YOUR CLASS will become eligible for the pizza parties. And YOU will become eligible to win one of the Weekend Getaways in Toronto and the Grand Prize of an Orlando, Florida March Break Vacation for Two in 2007.

Q: How do I obtain additional information?
A: Please send an e-mail to teachers@firesafetycouncil.com, or if you have an urgent enquiry please call toll-free 1-866-815-2820.
