Public Education Programs

THE VISION OF THE COUNCIL is predicated on the belief that to make Ontario the most fire safe community in North America, behavioural patterns of the public must be modified, and this can be best achieved by increasing awareness through public education.

Based on careful interpretation of fire loss statistics, the Council develops fire safety programs and initiatives in partnership with industry, the fire service and other organizations. The program focuses on changing behaviours related to injuries and deaths, such as reaching over a stove while wearing highly flammable and loose-fitting clothing, i.e., sleepwear. Through a partnership with the City of North York and the North York Fire Department, Older & Wiser was distributed to every fire department in Ontario.

Since it was established, the Council has encouraged the Ontario fire service to recognize the value of public education. Through the introduction of smoke alarm programs, Fire Prevention Week campaigns, media strategies and numerous other provincial initiatives, Ontario's fire departments now have the tools they need to effectively educate their communities about fire safety.

The Council actively promotes fire prevention and public education through a number of programs and activities that educate the public on appropriate fire safety behaviours, including:
